Data Engineering Services NZ Businesses Can Rely On

Most businesses don’t have a data shortage — they have a data mess. Sales figures live in one system, customer records in another, finance in Xero, marketing in spreadsheets, and nobody fully trusts the numbers in Monday’s report. ABNOVA Digital provides professional data engineering services in NZ that bring it all together: automated pipelines, a modern cloud data warehouse and dashboards your whole team can rely on.

We’re a Wellington-led data engineering company with a dedicated engineering team in Goa. That model gives New Zealand businesses senior-level data engineering at a price that works for SMEs, scale-ups and enterprises alike — with fixed-scope proposals quoted in NZD, so there are no surprise invoices.

What We Build

Data Pipelines & ETL / ELT Development

We design and build automated data pipelines that extract data from your systems — CRMs, ERPs, Xero, Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce, databases, APIs and flat files — transform it into clean, consistent models, and load it into your warehouse. Built with tools like dbt, Airflow, Fivetran and Airbyte, our pipelines run on schedule, recover from failures and alert you when something needs attention.

Cloud Data Warehouses & Lakehouses

A single source of truth for your business. We implement and optimise modern cloud data platforms on Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric and Azure Synapse — structured for fast queries, sensible costs and easy growth. Whether you’re starting from spreadsheets or replatforming a legacy warehouse, we’ll recommend the right architecture for your size and budget, not the most expensive one.

Business Intelligence & Dashboards

Data is only useful when people can see it. We build business intelligence dashboards in Power BI, Looker Studio, Tableau and Metabase — from executive KPI views to operational dashboards your team checks every morning. Automated reporting replaces hours of manual spreadsheet work every week.

Data Integration & Automation

Connect the tools you already use. We integrate accounting, e-commerce, CRM, inventory and marketing platforms so data flows automatically between systems — no more copy-pasting between Xero, Shopify and spreadsheets, and no more conflicting numbers.

Data Migration & Cleanup

Moving off a legacy system, consolidating databases or replatforming to the cloud? We plan and execute data migrations with validation at every step — deduplication, cleansing, mapping and reconciliation — so nothing is lost and the new system starts with clean, trustworthy data.

Real-Time & Streaming Data

For businesses that need up-to-the-minute data — live inventory, IoT sensors, event tracking, fraud detection — we build streaming pipelines with Kafka, Kinesis and Pub/Sub that process data as it happens.

AI & Machine Learning Readiness

AI is only as good as the data behind it. We build the clean, structured, well-governed data foundations that make machine learning, forecasting and AI tools like RAG and LLM integrations actually work — a natural next step once your warehouse is in place.

The Modern Data Stack, Without the Enterprise Price Tag

Enterprise data projects have a reputation for costing six figures and taking a year. Ours don’t. We use proven, modern tooling — dbt for transformation, Airflow or cloud-native orchestration for scheduling, Fivetran or Airbyte for ingestion, and Terraform for infrastructure — assembled pragmatically around your budget. Many of our clients start with a focused first phase: one warehouse, three to five key data sources, and a dashboard that answers their most important business questions.

  • Ingestion: Fivetran, Airbyte, custom API connectors
  • Transformation: dbt, SQL, Python, Spark
  • Warehouse / lakehouse: Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, Redshift, PostgreSQL
  • Orchestration: Airflow, Dagster, Azure Data Factory
  • BI & reporting: Power BI, Looker, Tableau, Metabase
  • Cloud: Azure, AWS, Google Cloud

Data Quality, Security & Governance Built In

Every pipeline we ship includes automated testing, data quality checks, monitoring and alerting — so broken data gets caught before it reaches a report. We follow least-privilege access, encryption in transit and at rest, and can align with the NZ Privacy Act 2020, GDPR and your internal governance requirements. You get documentation and handover, not a black box.

Transparent, Fixed-Price Data Engineering

Our Wellington-plus-Goa delivery model keeps costs well below typical NZ consultancy rates while senior engineers lead every build. Every engagement is fixed-scope, clearly quoted, and tailored to your needs:

  • Data audit & roadmap: Understand your current data landscape and get a practical plan for what to build next.
  • Starter data platform: Build a reliable foundation with core data sources, a warehouse and essential reporting.
  • Full data platform build: Connect multiple sources, build a modelled warehouse, deliver BI dashboards and establish monitoring.
  • Ongoing support & managed pipelines: Keep your data pipelines reliable, monitored and ready to evolve.

Data engineering FAQ

Common questions about data engineering

What is data engineering and why does my business need it?

Data engineering is the practice of collecting data from all your systems — accounting, CRM, e-commerce, spreadsheets — cleaning it, and delivering it to one reliable place where it can be reported on and trusted. If your team spends hours building manual reports, or different departments quote different numbers for the same thing, data engineering fixes that permanently.

How long does a data engineering project take?

A data audit takes 1–2 weeks. A starter data platform typically takes 12–24 weeks, and a full multi-source platform 24–48 weeks depending on complexity. You'll see working pipelines and dashboards in weekly demos throughout.

Should I use Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Athena?

It depends on your existing tools, data volume and budget. BigQuery suits Google-centric teams and pay-per-query pricing; Snowflake is a strong all-rounder with excellent scaling; Databricks is ideal for heavy processing and machine learning; Athena fits organisations already invested in AWS. We'll recommend the right platform for your situation — not the most expensive one.

What is ETL and how is it different from ELT?

Both move data from your source systems into a warehouse. ETL (extract, transform, load) cleans the data before loading it; ELT (extract, load, transform) loads raw data first and transforms it inside the warehouse using tools like dbt. Modern cloud platforms generally favour ELT because it's faster, cheaper and easier to audit — and it's our default approach.

Can you connect Xero, Shopify, HubSpot and our other tools?

Yes. We build integrations for Xero, Shopify, WooCommerce, HubSpot, Salesforce, MYOB, Stripe, Google Analytics and hundreds of other platforms — via managed connectors or custom APIs — so your data flows automatically into one place.

Is our data secure, and do you comply with the NZ Privacy Act?

Yes. We follow least-privilege access controls, encryption in transit and at rest, and can host your data in your preferred region. We align builds with the NZ Privacy Act 2020 and GDPR where required, and you retain full ownership and control of your data and infrastructure at all times.

We're a small business running on spreadsheets. Is data engineering overkill for us?

Not at all — small businesses often see the fastest payoff. A right-sized starter platform can replace hours of weekly manual reporting with automated dashboards, and it scales as you grow. We deliberately avoid over-engineering: if a simpler solution serves you better, we'll tell you.

Do we own the pipelines, code and infrastructure you build?

Yes. You receive full ownership of all code, data models, infrastructure configuration and documentation. There's no vendor lock-in and no proprietary black box — any competent engineer could pick up where we left off.

Do you provide ongoing support after the build?

Yes. We offer managed pipeline support from NZD [$XXX]/month, covering monitoring, failure resolution, platform updates, new data sources and dashboard changes — so your data platform stays reliable as your business evolves.
